Description:
This course traces the development of American literature from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution through the 1890s. A major focus is the novels of writers such as Howells, Twain, Dreiser, Norris, Wharton and James. The course will also trace the development of the poetic tradition from popular and experimental poets of the 1870s through the “genteel” poets of the 1890s.
