Description:
This course examines the development of political thought in the West from the Renaissance to World War I. The focus is on such thinkers as Machiavelli, Hobbes, Milton, Locke, Rousseau, Burke, Bentham, Mill, Marx and Nietzsche. Students are asked to engage with the ethical dimension of the various perspectives in political thought and in so doing to clarify their own ethical identity.
